The zookeepers and veterinarians at the Columbus Zoo got a very unexpected surprise last week.
Sully, an eight-year-old western lowland gorilla that has lived at the zoo since 2019, gave birth to a baby girl. Not only did staff not know Sully was pregnant, they also didn't know Sully was a female. They believed she was a male and were shocked last week when they suddenly found her holding her newborn baby.
A statement from the zoo explains, "It's hard to tell the sex of younger gorillas. Until about age 8, males and females are about the same size, and they don't have prominent sex organs. As gorillas age, they become sexually dimorphic, meaning males and females look very different."
A DNA test will be conducted later to determine who the father is. Is Maury Povich available?
The staff may want to take a closer look at the other gorillas!
