Ray Manzarek Tells Story of How "Riders on the Storm" Was Created

Ray Manzarek, the late keyboardist for The Doors, gave an in-depth look at the creation of one of the greatest songs of all-time, "Riders on the Storm."

He explains how guitarist Robby Krieger was just noodling around during rehearsals for the band's record and came up with the underlying riff. Upon hearing it, Jim Morrison lit up, saying he had vocals, namely the "Riders on the Storm" part that would fit the music, and that became the foundation of the song.

Manzarek said he then wanted to add some "dark jazz" with the keyboard and also wrote the bass line which was easily played on the keys but not so easily on a bass guitar.
