SNL: Latest Show Had Things for Springsteen, Cobain & Mumford Fans (Video)

This week's Saturday Night Live had a little something special for fans of Bruce Springsteen, Kurt Cobain and Mumford and Sons, with each intersecting with the show in a different way.

First on was Marcus Mumford of Mumford and Songs, whose wife, actress Carey Mulligan, was the show's host. During her monologue, Marcus popped out of the seated audience and "surprised" her by being there in person. Mulligan quickly asked him where their kids were and he explained that he'd "left them with the Sons."

The next question was his. "Do you know if there's a musical guest tonight?' She replied that there was. He told her if they needed one he'd be "very happy to do it," and quickly strapped on his guitar and started strumming as she tried to finish the monologue.

"Come on," she said to him, "You're being that guy who takes his acoustic guitar out at a party," to which he answered, "People love that guy!" Eventually he ending up standing next to her facing the main camera. After scolding him, she allowed him to play her out as she closed the segment.

The show's actual musical guest, rapper-singer Kid Cudi, unexpectedly paid tribute to Kurt Cobain -- not once, but twice. For his first song, "Tequila Shots," he sported a green cardigan like the one Cobain wore on Nirvana's iconic MTV Unplugged episode -- the sweater that sold at auction for $335,000 two years ago. Underneath it, Cudi had on a T-shirt with a photo of the late SNL cast member Chris Farley.

Cudi's outfit for his second song, "Sad People," was a bit more controversial, and drew a mixed reaction on social media. He wore a white floral dress with spaghetti straps, which he later tweeted was also a tribute to Cobain, who wore a dress on stage with Nirvana quite a few times. He also tweeted that the dress will be included in a fashion collection he's doing with Off White.

Weekend Update featured a parody of the recent Barack Obama-Bruce Springsteen podcast, Renegades, with Chris Redd as Obama and Beck Bennett as Springsteen. They were interviewed by Michael Che who seemed put off by the goofiness of their dialogue, or, as he put it, "I don't know, man. For such interesting people, it kinda sounds like just two guys talking." They defended themselves by saying they were "riffing," but Che remained unconvinced.
