Steely Dan, on their first tour without late founding member Walter Becker, have worked one of his songs into the set as a tribute.
The other founding member, Donald Fagen, tells Canada's Orilla Packet & Times, "There's a tune that Walter used to do, called 'Book of Liars,' that he wrote. Last few nights, I've been doing that. We show some pictures from Walter's earlier years. I don't like to be sentimental about these, but the audience really seems to appreciate it. I think it's a good thing to do... I think he sang it better than I do, but I give it my best shot."
Though the cause of Becker's death last month hasn't been revealed, Fagen says he was "pretty ill for, maybe, at least five years. He was dealing with some serious health problems, which he was valiantly fighting. But it caught up with him after a while... All he wanted to do was play; that was his life. It's great that he could do it."
Steely Dan are in our area next week for two shows:
Tuesday, Oct. 24 at Pier Six Pavilion in Baltimore
Wednesday, Oct. 25 at The Theater at MGM/National Harbor
