Bruce Springsteen got his four-month Broadway residency underway Tuesday night at the Walter Kerr Theatre in New York City with the first of seven preview performances before the official premiere next Thursday.
Dedicated to Tom Petty, the show ran just less two hours and featured a cross-section of his catalog -- starting with "Growin' Up" and ending with "Born to Run."
As promised, the intimate show was acoustic-based with lots of stories, most told while he noodled on his guitar. While billed as a solo show, his wife, singer Patti Scialfa, joined him on two songs -- "Tougher Than the Rest" and "Brilliant Disguise."
Speaking to Variety about preparing for these shows, he said, "You’ve gotta have respect for your own ability and for the audience’s investment in you, and it’s always driven me to be very present when I walk out on a stage on any given night. I can’t imagine coming out on any stage and not giving everything I have."
Show number-two is tonight.
