Nashville Predators prospect Luke Prokop has made history as the first openly gay player in league history.
The 19-year-old told his story in a statement posted to Instagram on Monday, writing "I am no longer scared to hide who I am".
Prokop says he came out to family and teammates last month and has received behind-the-scenes support from his team, his agent, and even NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.
The 6-foot-4 defenseman was a 3rd round pick by the Predators in 2020 and played last year for the WHL's Calgary Hitmen.
With the barrier now broken in both the NFL and NHL, will announcements like this become more commonplace?
What kind of reaction will Prokop or the Raiders' Carl Nassib get during the season?
