Americans Are Identifying As LGBTQ More Than Ever, Poll Finds

About 5.6% of Americans identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer according to a new Gallop poll.

That's up from 4.5% in 2017.

The poll shows younger Americans are increasingly likely to consider themselves part of the LGBTQ community as well: Nearly 16% of Generation Z (ages 18 to 23) consider themselves something other than heterosexual compared to just 2% of Americans 56 and older.

A Gallup editor said the numbers suggest a greater willingness to be open about their identity.

"Younger people are growing up in an environment where being gay, lesbian, or bisexual is not as taboo as it was in the past."
