Scientists from the University of California – Davis hung out on a boat off the coast of Alaska to have a 20-minute "conversation" with a humpback whale named Twain.
The scientists used an underwater speaker to play recorded whale sounds – and then used AI to analyze the responses they got from Twain as the whale circled the boat.
The leader of the group, Dr. Brenda McCowan, believes this is the first communication exchange between humans and humpback whales in the "humpback language."
