George Harrison wrote a song called "Old Brown Shoe," which The Beatles recorded, but it's Paul McCartney who's auctioning off a pair of old black boots in support of his Meat Free Monday campaign.
He designed the black vegan suede boots with shoemaker Crispinians for his 2011 On the Run world tour and wore them during his performance at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
He says, “As it was time for me to get myself a new pair of boots I thought this might be a good way to help our Meat Free Monday campaign celebrate its 15th anniversary.
“Me and my boots have great memories of that special evening at the Olympic opening ceremony in London. It was a high to be involved with such an awesome and spectacular event. Something I’ll remember forever.”
They are being sold by Sotheby's in London starting May 24th with a pre-sale estimate of $12- to $19,000. The auction closes on May 31st.
McCartney founded Meat Free Mondays in 2009 with his daughters Mary and Stella to encourage people to help the environment by committing to eating at least one plant-based meal a week.
“It’s a great idea, and I urge you to try it, and if you like it then spread the word,” says Paul. “And if enough people do it, it really will make a considerable difference to the future of this planet.”
