For decades, whales in the ocean have been at risk of colliding with ships -- and it's believed that between 18,000 and 25,000 animals die each year. Scientists have developed some cool technology to help solve this problem.

Off the coast of Chile, there's a "smart buoy" that uses artificial intelligence to listen for whales -- and then sends messages to ships to help them avoid collisions.

Plans are in place to install more of these buoys in the ocean, especially along the migratory route between Antarctica and the equator.
