Supermarket Shelves Collapse in Domino Effect, Crushing One Worker to Death

A shocking video shows the moment that a row of very tall shelves in a supermarket collapse in a domino effect, resulting in a worker being crushed to death.

Late Friday night at the Mateus Atacarejo Supermarket in Sao Luis, Brazil, the store was reportedly packed with customers when tragedy struck.

In surveillance footage, one of the large metallic structures in the far right of the screen begins to fall, leading other shelves to collapse in a domino effect. Customers and workers can be seen fleeing the area as the shelves begin to collapse.

In the aftermath, people formed a chain gang to remove all of the goods that had fallen in order to find anyone who had possibly been trapped in the disaster.

Sadly, 21-year-old Elane de Oliveria Rodrigues, an employee of the store, was crushed to death while she was stocking shelves. She had reportedly only been working at the store for three months.

Six other individuals were taken by emergency services for treatment of injuries sustained in the collapsed. All have been released. Two others suffered minor injuries and did not require hospital visits.
