PETA is honoring an upstate New York Police officer who helped free a raccoon who had gotten tightly stuck inside of a can.

They held a ceremony this morning outside of police headquarters in Suffern, NY.

Ramapo Police Officer Christopher Byrnes received a special Compassionate Police Department Award and a vegan spread from Carmines Italian Deli Cafe in Elmsford. It was on Sunday, July 25th when officer Byrnes was able to free the raccoon after several attempts, who then scurried off into the woods unharmed.
