St. Vincent was one of four women to sing with Nirvana at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in April. Bassist Krist Novoselic has previously noted that including women to front Nirvana "conjured the spirit" of the band.
The singer/songwriter/guitarist (real name Anne Clark) recently talked to NME about what that performance meant to her and the band's legacy.
"I thought it was a really cool way to honor the Olympia, [Washington] punk, freak, queer, feminist scene that the Nirvana guys came up in and were so very engrossed in that they asked women to fill in. I thought it was a nice way to honor that part of their history, which sort of gets whitewashed in all the retrospective."
St. Vincent also noted that the loss of Kurt Cobain still seems to be tough for the surviving members and his family, "it just seemed like...the wound was still quite raw."
